Understanding Fabric GSM Weight: The Procurement Checklist

GSM (Grams per Square Meter) is the metric standard for measuring fabric weight. In B2B procurement, verifying GSM is critical to ensure you receive the exact material grade contracted with the weaving mill.

1. Why GSM Matters in Sourcing

Fabric weight directly impacts mechanical properties, handfeel, and cost. If a mill ships a 200 GSM fabric instead of the contracted 220 GSM, they save 10% of yarn raw materials—a margin loss that passes directly to you in the form of weaker garment construction.

2. The Handheld GSM Cutter Test

Always perform tests on random rolls. Cut a 100cm² circular sample using a calibrated round fabric cutter. Weigh the sample on a digital micro-precision scale. Multiply the resulting weight in grams by 100 to calculate the exact GSM of the batch.

3. Tolerances and Moisture Regains

Standard B2B contracts allow a +/- 5% weight tolerance. Keep in mind that natural fibers like cotton and linen absorb ambient moisture. A roll stored in humid conditions will weigh heavier than one stored in a dry warehouse. Standardize testing conditions at 65% relative humidity and 20°C.
